Suncare Myths Explained With Saltee

Suncream is often made to feel complicated these days so we’ve teamed up with British suncare brand Saltee who talk us through a few questions we have on our mind.  Saltee want to inspire sun confidence and promote smart suncare. We asked the experts to clear up a few suncare myths floating around.  Here are the all-important questions answered once and for all…

Are all UV rays the same?

UV radiation from the sun is transmitted in three wavelengths – UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC does not penetrate the earth’s atmosphere, so we only really need to protect against UVA and UVB.

UV irradiation in the form of UVA is associated with skin ageing. UVA affects the elastin in the skin and leads to wrinkles and sun-induced skin ageing as well as skin cancer. UVA can penetrate window glass and penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB. UVA protection in a sunscreen helps defend the skin against photo ageing and potentially skin cancer.

UVB is the form of UV irradiation most responsible for sunburn and has strong links to malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma risk (types of skin cancer). A sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) will help block UVB rays and prevent the skin from burning, and by extension damage that can cause skin cancer.

All Saltee products provide broad spectrum ultra-protection against UVA and UVB rays.

Does the factor on the bottle represent the number of minutes you are protected from the sun?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can contribute to skin cancer. It is important to note that a sunscreen SPF rating is only indicative of its protection from UVB rays. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will protect you against 97% of UVB rays and will protect you 30 times longer than if you did not use sunscreen.

All Saltee products are a minimum 30 SPF. And our face formulas are SPF 50. We care about ensuring the best sun protection allowing you reconnect with your sun confidence.

Do cloudy days block out the sun rays from my skin?

Gone are the days where cloudy skies meant we could leave our SPF behind.  UVB rays might be weaker during the colder months but UVA rays are the ones we need to be aware of. Your skin is prone to wrinkles, premature ageing and damage just as much now as they were when you were soaking up the sun on holiday during the summer. If you’re heading slopeside, stock up on your SPF. Snow actually reflects UVA rays, doubling your exposure! Other common spaces to think of are through your car windows whilst driving and shorter bursts of exposure. Even popping out for an Autumn stroll. For cloudier days we recommend our SPF50 Face Daily Protection Formula – light enough for every day wear and strong enough to protect against UVA and UVB rays.

Do I need to go red before you go brown?

No this is not true. As soon as your skin burns and goes red, it’s in the trauma stage and this is the man contributing factor to skin damage and skin cancer.  To reduce UV damage and burning skin you must wear a high factor suncream.  Not only does this mean your skin is protected but achieving a tan more slowly means it will last longer also.

At Saltee we recognise that we often feel better with a healthy glow – with this in mind our body products have tan accelerators that will help you achieve a ‘summer sun look’ without compromising your safety. Apart from safe sun exposure (with high SPF sunscreen), we’d also recommend a pre-vacay exfoliation to get you skin tan ready and looking your best. All our body care will help you achieve a beautiful golden tan, the safe way. Our SPF 50 Body Active and SPF 50 Body Sea & Sun Lotions are derived exactly with this in mind.

My make-up has SPF in it.  Is this enough?

There’s no harm in using make-up that contains SPF but don’t ditch your suncream.  It’s more than likely your favourite foundation doesn’t contain a high enough factor to thoroughly protect you from both UVA and UVB rays and it’s not likely you are applying enough of it to protect fully.  Make sure you use an ultra-high product alongside your make-up for full protection.

SFP 50 Daily Formula is the product everyone is talking about. This product not only provides ultra UVA and UVB protection, but also contains Avocado Oil for ultimate hydration with that ‘barely-there’ feel. The light and fresh formula absorbs within seconds, leaving no white streaky marks and perfect for everyday use, with or without make-up. This is the best suncare for daily use on the face.

Wherever you’re headed this summer ensure you take your Saltee along with you.
