Meet The Maker: Jenny from Jenny Betts London

We met Jenny early in our journey to start Seekology and she has been a fantastic support and sounding board through our scoping and launch period. She embodies the type of brand we want to help our customers discover: an entrepreneur with foresight, creativity and grace, and we love both her candles and her bath + body range. We sat down with Jenny Betts, to hear more about her story:

What inspired you to set up indie beauty + wellbeing brand Jenny Betts London?

I have always been obsessed with the impact fragrance can have on you, from its power to remind you of past events to its ability to affect your mod. As a qualified beauty therapist, I wanted to harness that power in order to offer a bespoke multi-sensory experience for every client when they received their treatment.

I began to make my own soy wax candles to light during treatments and my clients enjoyed the effect so much they asked if they could have one for home. Before long they were asking me to make them as gifts for their friends and family, and Jenny Betts London was born. We now have a full bath & body range, including body scrubs, body butters and beauty gift sets

What's it been like making the transition to being an entrepreneur?

My fifteen years in beauty therapy has proved vital in setting up Jenny Betts London, from understanding the market and clientele, the fantastic market research group my clients became to understanding the fundamentals of business accounts and management. Both roles have required determination and self motivation as well as the ability to think about the clients’ needs and ensuring they are always met.

Who or what inspires you?

The opportunity to use my business and the voice that grants me to help other people motivates and inspires me to work hard. As a female entrepreneur, I mentor other women as they set out on their journey. I was delighted to be asked to be a guest speaker at Femme Entrepreneurs networking event in London and appear alongside Kay Burley and Paula Sheriff MP as a guest speaker for Wellbeing of Women charity about the challenges women face in the workplace.

What do you do when you're not working?

As an entrepreneur, I’m always working because it is my hobby as well as a job. For instance, when on holiday in the South of France, I made a detour to visit Grasse, the world’s capital of perfume, to learn as much as I could about fragrances from the experts. At home, I like to invite friends round for dinner - they are always willing guinea pigs to test new product ideas. Even my niece has an opinion!

What's your favourite product from the range?

Such a tricky question! I’m thrilled with every product and fragrance I’ve created because they were designed with the purpose of helping someone achieve a better state of mind and mood. However, I’ll always have a soft sport for my single wick home fragrance which is where the business began, and was such a hit with my beauty therapy clients. I wanted my products to be everyday luxuries, to be enjoyed immediately, not put away for a so called 'special occasion’. At £25, I wanted my Bamboo & White Grapefruit scented soy wax candle to be the perfect price point to enjoy, or gift, a high end luxurious product without breaking the bank.

What's next for Jenny Betts London?

I’m a firm believer in the mantra, ‘always learning’ and I want to make sure that as a business, that’s what we do. We’ll achieve this by listening to our customers, being curious about new fragrances and products, and expanding our range in response.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Be brave and don’t be afraid to make mistakes! When I met Jo Malone, she told me “Mistakes are a part of life. Resilience creates business muscle.” I couldn’t have put it better myself.

What a fantastic piece of advice! We think we’ll be quoting Jenny Betts herself in the future. Please do follow our blog for more remarkable Seekology stories.
